2022 Commonwealth Games
The 2022 Commonwealth Games will feature 71 countries from the Commonwealth. A host will be decided in future years.
Possible bids
Africa
- The coastal city in South Africa is planning a possible bid for the games following its withdrawal from the 2020 Summer Olympics. It would be the first Commonwealth Games in Africa.[1]
- It has been suggested that if Abuja wins their bid to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, then they may bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. [2]
Europe
- In 2009 it was suggested that Cardiff might bid for the 2022 Games, with some events to be held in Newport and Swansea. Link http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/8309638.stm
Oceania
- After the major earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, the rebuilt city is planning to bid for the 2022 edition in order to introduce the city to the world. Christchurch previously hosted the Commonwealth Games (then British Commonwealth Games) in 1974.[3]
Christchurch's and any bid from the Oceania Region is now in doubt with the awarding of the 2018 games to Gold Coast, Australia. [4]
